In 1971, ALOHAnet connected the Great Hawaiian Islands to a UHF packet wireless network. The Netherlands is the birthplace of Wi-Fi technology. The first version of the 802.11 protocol was released in 1997 and provided a link speed of 2 Mbps. It was updated with 802.11b in 1999 to allow a link speed of 11 Mbps, which has proven very popular.
Wi-Fi Alliance was established in 1999 and is a trade association that owns the Wi-Fi brand used to sell most products.
