UGC Full Form
UGC Full Form stands for “University Grants Commission”. The University Grants Commission (UGC India) is a statutory body established by the Indian government in accordance with the UGC Act 1956 of the Ministry of Education, responsible for coordinating, setting, and maintaining higher education standards.
It recognizes universities in India and provides funding to these recognized universities. The organization pays attention to the rules, regulations, and standards of Indian universities.
The UGC full form (University Grants Commission) was established in 1945 to oversee the work of the three central universities in Aligarh, Banaras, and Delhi. Its responsibilities were expanded to include all Indian universities in 1947.
In November 1956, after the Indian Parliament passed the “University Grants Committee Act 1956”, the UGC became a statutory body.
The UGC’s headquarters are in Bahadur Shah Zafar Marg, New Delhi, and in Feroze Shah Road and the South Campus of the University of Delhi. There are also offices in 35 offices.
Universities Controlled By The UGC
- The Central University or Federal University is established in accordance with the law promulgated by the Parliament and is authorized by the Higher Education Administration of the Ministry of Education
- As of October 6, 2017, the UGC has listed 370 public universities. The earliest date listed by the UGC is 1857, shared by the University of Mumbai, the University of Madras, and the University of Calcutta. Most public universities are affiliated universities because they have several affiliated universities (many of which are located in very small cities).
- The Indian Institute of Science was the first institution to obtain university status, which was granted university status on May 12, 1958. In many cases, the same UGC list covers several institutes. For example, the Homi Bhabha National Institute includes the Institute of Mathematical Sciences, etc.
