After being a member of the Indian National Congress for 26 years, Mamata Banerjee joined the “Trinamool Congress”, which was registered with the Election Commission of India in mid-December 1999.

The Election Commission had allotted a special symbol of Jora to a party called Grass Flowers. On September 2, 2016, the Election Commission recognized the TMC as a national political party.
