RFID: Radio Frequency Identification

RFID Full Form

RFID full form stands for Radio Frequency Identification. Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) uses electromagnetic fields to automatically detect and track tags associated with objects.

An RFID system consists of a small radio transponder, a radio receiver, and a transmitter.

Brief History

  • On January 23, 1973, the Mario Cardolo device, patented, was the first original ancestor of modern RFID, as it was a passive radio transponder with memory.
  • The initial device was ineffective, running on investigative signals, and was demonstrated to the New York Port Authority and other potential customers in 1971.
  • The original business plan presented to investors in 1969 Transportation, Security, Identification, automated gateways, surveillance, and medicine.
  • In 1983, the first patent was given to Charles Walton in conjunction with the acronym RFID.

Procedure

When an electromagnetic probe from a nearby RFID reader device is triggered by a nib, the tag sends digital data, usually an identification list number, back to the reader. This number can be used to track inventory lists.

RFID Tags

There are two types of RFID tags.

  • Passive Tags: RFID reader probe through this tag energy runs radio waves.
  • Active tags: Active tags are battery-powered and can be read hundreds of meters away from an RFID reader.
