PVC: Poly Vinyl Chloride
PVC Full Form
PVC full form stands for Poly Vinyl Chloride. Pure polyvinyl chloride is a white, easily brittle solid. It is soluble in alcohol but slightly soluble in tetrahydrofuran.
Poly Vinyl chloride is the world’s third most widely produced synthetic plastic polymer. About 40 million tons of PVC are produced every year.
PVC comes in two basic forms: rigid and flexible. PVC was synthesized in 1872 by the German chemist Eugene Bowman after extensive research and experiments. Polyvinyl chloride is produced by polymerization of vinyl chloride monomer (VCM).
Due to poor compliance with environmental regulations and poor capacity, half of the world’s PVC production capacity is in China. By 2018, the largest single producer of PVC is Japan, with a global share of about 30%. Other major suppliers are based in North America and Western Europe.
Adding plasticizers can make it softer and more flexible, which is one of the most widely used. In this form, it is also used in plumbing, flooring, signage, inflatable products, phonograph records, electrical cable insulation, imitation leather, and many other applications where it replaces rubber. With cotton or linen, it is used in the manufacture of the canvas.
Hardened PVC is used in pipe construction and in profile applications such as doors and windows. It is also used for food wrapping sheets, make bottles, non-food packaging, and cards (such as bank or membership cards).
PVC full form (Poly Vinyl Chloride) is a thermoplastic polymer. Its properties are generally classified on the basis of rigid and flexible PVC. PVC has hardness and mechanical properties.
Mechanical properties increase with non-molecular weight gain but decrease with increasing temperature. Hard PVC has very good mechanical properties. Flexible modules can go up to 1500–3,000 MPa. Soft PVC (Flexible PVC) Flexible range is 1.5-15 MPa.
