NCERT full form stands for National Council of Educational Research and Training. The National Council of Educational Research and Training is an independent organization of the Government of India which was established as a literary, scientific, and charitable society under the Society Registration Act.

It is headquartered in Sri Aurobindo Marg in New Delhi. Dr. Harishkesh Sanapati has been the Director of the Council since September 2015.

Brief History

  • The Ministry of Education of the Government of India committed on 27 July 1961 to the establishment of the National Council of Educational Research and Training, which formally began its work on 1 September 1961.
  • The council was formed in association with seven existing national government agencies, the Central Institute of Education, Central Bureau of Educational and Vocational Guidance, Directorate of Extension Program for Secondary Education, and National Institute of Audio-Visual Education.
  • The NCERT was established with the design and support agenda of a general education system that is national in character and enables and encourages diverse cultures across the country. It is separate from the National Council for Teacher Education.
  • The first National Policy Statement on Education was issued in 1968, based on the recommendations of the Education Commission (1964–66).
  • The policy supported a 10-year general education program adopting a similar approach to schooling across the country.
