Brief Explanation

The people elect a representative from each constituency who then becomes a member of the Legislative Assembly (MLA). Each state has seven to nine members for each member of parliament (MP) in its lower house, the lower house of India’s bicameral parliament.

Those who cannot become Members of Parliament cannot become members of the State Legislature. During the Emergency, the term of the Legislative Assembly may be extended, but not more than six months at a time.
