LOC: Line of Control

LOC Full Form

LOC full form stands for Line of Control. The Line of Control (LOC) is a military line of control between the Indian and Pakistani-controlled parts of the former state of Jammu and Kashmir.

This line, which does not form a legally recognized international border, is rather cross-border.

Brief History

After the partition of India, present-day India and Pakistan competed for the state of Jammu and Kashmir, the state of India, on the basis of the Muslim-majority population of the state and the reach of the ruler in Pakistan.

After another Kashmir war in 1965, and the Indo-Pakistani war of 1971 only a minor amendment was applied to the original ceasefire. In the forthcoming Shimla Agreement of 1973, the two countries agreed to turn the Line of Ceasefire into a “Line of Control”.

Brief Explanation

Originally known as the Ceasefire Line, it was reorganized as the Line of Control following the Shimla Agreement, which was signed on July 3, 1972.

Part of the former Indian state is divided into central parts of Jammu and Kashmir and Ladakh, while part of the Pakistan-controlled state is divided into Azad Kashmir and Gilgit-Baltistan.

The northern view of the Line of Control is known as NJ9842. The Indo-Pakistan border continues from the southeast point of the LoC.
