ICDS: Integrated Child Development Services
ICDS Full Form
ICDS full form stands for Integrated Child Development Services. The Integrated Child Development Service (ICDS) is a government program in India that provides basic health care, food, health screening, preschool education, immunization, and more to children under 6 and their mothers.
The scheme was launched in 1975, discontinued by Morarji Desai’s government in 1978, and then reintroduced through the Tenth Five-Year Plan.
The ICDS was launched in 1975 under the National Policy for Children in India. Over the years, it has become one of the largest integrated family and social welfare schemes in the world. In view of its effectiveness over the last few decades, the Government of India has resolved to ensure the global availability of the program.
In addition to fighting malnutrition and poor health, the program aims to combat gender inequality by providing girls with the same resources as boys. The wide network of ICDS plays an important role in combating malnutrition, especially for children from vulnerable groups.
A 2005 study found that the ICDS program was not particularly effective in reducing malnutrition, largely due to implementation problems and the fact that the poorest states received minimal coverage and funding. During the financial year 2018-19, the central government allocated Rs 16,335 crore for this program.
