HDD: Hard Disk Drive

HDD Full Form

HDD full form stands for Hard Disk Drive. A hard disk drive (HDD) also known as a hard drive, hard disk, or fixed disk is an electromechanical data storage device that combines magnetic storage and magnetic materials using one or more rigid fast-rotating platters.

HDD is a type of unstable storage that maintains data even on the go. Modern HDDs are usually in the form of a small rectangular box.

Brief History

The first production IBM hard disk drive was 350 disk storage. It was shipped in 1957 as part of the IBM 305 RAMAC system. It was about the size of two medium-sized refrigerators and stored 5 million six-bit characters (3.75 megabytes) on a stack of 52 disks (100 used surfaces).

The 350 had two reading/writing heads, one facing up and the other at the bottom, one pair between the pair of adjacent clasps and one pair of two platters from one to the other vertical. IBM 350 variants were IBM 355, IBM 7300, and IBM 1405.

Benefits

  • Hard disk drives are faster than optical disks.
  • HDDs have a large data storage capacity.
  • One of the major benefits of a hard disk drive is its low cost.
  • A hard disk drive is readily available in the market.
