It is one of the five Central Armed Police Forces of India and was raised on 1 December 1965 to “ensure the security of India’s borders and related matters” in the context of the 1965 war.

It is a Central Armed Police Force / Central Para-Military Force, charged with guarding the land border in Bangladesh with India and Pakistan as well as preventing international crimes since the outbreak of war. It comes under the Ministry of Home Affairs.

The Headquarters of the BSF full form (Border Security Force) is in New Delhi and is known as the Headquarters of the Force (FHQ) headed by the Director-General. In 1965, the BSF rapidly expanded from a few battalions to 186 battalions, comprising 257,363 personnel, including an expanded air wing, naval wing, artillery regiment, and special units.

Various Directorates like Operations, Communication and IT, Training, Engineering, General, Law, Supply, Administration, Staff, Arms, Medical, Finance, etc. work under the Director-General. Each Directorate is headed by an IG.
