OTP: One-time Password
OTP Full Form
OTP full form stands for One-Time Password. A one-time password (OTP) that is also known as a one-time PIN or dynamic password, is a password that is suitable only for a login session or transaction on a computer system or other digital device.
OTPs avoid many of the drawbacks associated with traditional (static) password-based authentication.
Many implementations also include two-factor authentication, ensuring that a one-time password requires one to have access to something (such as an OTP calculator or a small one with a smart card or special cell phone Carved phone device) as if someone knows something (such as a pin).
Multiple OTP systems also ensure that a session cannot be easily interrupted or duplicated without knowledge of unexpected data generated during the previous session, thus further reducing the level of attack.
- Unlike static passwords, they are less vulnerable to attacks. This means that a potential intruder who manages to record an OTP that was already used to log in or transact in service will not be able to misuse it, as it will no longer be acceptable.
- A user who uses the same (or similar) password for multiple systems is not made vulnerable at all, even if the password of one of them is compromised by the attacker.
