MGNREGA full form stands for Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act. Mahatma Gandhi Employment Guarantee Act 2005 is an Indian labor law and social security measure aimed at guaranteeing the ‘right to work’.
The Act was passed in September 2005 under the UPA Government of Prime Minister Manmohan Singh.
The Act was first proposed by PV in 1991. It was eventually adopted in Parliament and implemented in 625 districts of India. Based on this pilot experience, It was formed on 1 April 2008 to cover all the districts of India.
The law has been adopted by the government as “the world’s largest and most ambitious social security and public works program”. In the World Development Report 2014, the World Bank called it “a splendid example of rural development”.
It aims to increase employment security by providing at least 100 days of salary to every household member in rural areas, whose adult members do unskilled manual work.
