GIF Full Form
GIF full form stands for Graphics Interchange Format. GIF full form (Graphics Interchange Format) is a bitmap format, developed on June 15, 1987, by a team of online service provider CompuServe led by American computer scientist Steve Wilhite. Due to its wide support, it has been widely used on the World Wide Web.
The format supports up to 8 bits per pixel per image, allowing a single image to refer to its color palette, which defines up to 256 different colors from the 24-bit RGB color space. It also supports animation and allows for a separate palette of up to 256 colors per frame.
CompuServe introduced GIF on June 15, 1987, to provide a color image format for its file download region. This replaces the previous run-length encoding format, which is in black and white only. GIF has become popular due to the use of LZW data compression. Since this is more efficient than the run-length encryption used by PCX and MacPaint, even with a slow modem, you can download very large images very quickly.
The original version of the GIF is called 87a. In 1989, CompuServe released an improved version 89a, which added support for animation delays (multiple images in the stream are already supported in 87a), transparent background colors, and storage of application-specific metadata. The two versions can be distinguished by looking at the first six bytes of the file (the “magic number” or signature).
- GIF is appropriate for sharp calligraphy arts with limited colors, such as logos. This takes full advantage of the non-formatting compression function, which results in flat areas with uniform edges and well-defined borders.
