DHCP Full Form
DHCP full form stands for Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol. Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol (DHCP) is a network management protocol that is used on an Internet Protocol (IP) local area network.
It introduced the concept of a relay agent, which allowed sending BOOTP packets across the network, allowing a central BOOTP server to serve hosts on multiple IP subnets. A DHCP server must exist on the network.
- In 1984, the Reference Address Resolution Protocol (RARP), defined in RFC 903, was introduced to allow simple devices such as diskless workstations to obtain a suitable IP address.
- However, because it worked at the data link layer, it became difficult to implement on many server platforms, and it was also necessary to have servers on every network link.
- RARP was developed in September 1985 by the bootstrap protocol (BOOTP) described in RFC 951.
A device connected to the network requests an IP address from the DHCP server to the DHCP server. The server identifies the TCP / IP communication identifier, provides the device with a unique address, and other network configuration parameters.
In the absence of a DHCP server, a device that needs an IP address has to manually assign a static address via the network administrator or assign an APIPA address near it (which it must use in its local subnet will not be able to communicate outside).
